Orange cream

What is orange cream?

An orange cream spread is a sweet, smooth cream flavoured with orange, to spread on bread or to fill cakes. It is different from an orange curd (made with juice, eggs and butter) and from an orange pastry cream (milk, egg yolks and starch, cooked at home): it is ready to use and keeps in the cupboard.

Ours, the Orange Cream, gets its flavour from orange powder and orange essential oil, the aromatic oil of the peel, in a milky base made with sunflower oil, cocoa butter and extra virgin olive oil, never palm oil. For gelato there is the orange topping, and at Christmas the orange panettone with a jar of cream in the box. Everything is made in our facilities in Ribera, in Sicily. The orange

Five things to know about oranges

An ancient hybrid, a journey from Asia to the Mediterranean and a perfume hidden in the peel: meet the orange.

  1. 1

    An ancient hybrid

The sweet orange (Citrus × sinensis) does not exist in the wild: it is an ancient hybrid of the pomelo and the mandarin, born in southern China. From there it slowly travelled west along the trade routes.

  2. 2

    A "Portuguese" fruit

The Arabs brought the bitter orange to Sicily around the year 1000; the sweet orange arrived later, in the 15th and 16th centuries, with Portuguese merchants. That is why in Greek (portokali) and in several dialects of southern Italy (portogallo) the orange is still named after Portugal.

  3. 3

The perfume is in the peel

The scent of orange is not in the juice but in the essential oil held in tiny glands of the coloured part of the peel. It is what you smell when you grate the zest, and it is what we use, together with orange powder, in our Orange Cream.

  4. 4

    The red oranges of Sicily

The Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello blood oranges owe their colour to anthocyanins, pigments that develop with the strong difference between warm days and cold nights in the area around Mount Etna. They are protected by the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia PGI.

  5. 5

    Why athletes love it

A fresh orange provides about 50 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, water and potassium, with few calories: a classic after training. Our cream is a sweet treat for breakfast; for protein, look at the Performance Collection, with over 20 g of protein per 100 g and no added sugar.

Scyavuru quality

Pistachio and almond trees in Sicily

Freshness you can smell.

Since 1950 we have been working nuts and creams in Ribera, in the agricultural heart of Sicily. Our orange cream is refined slowly in our own facilities until it is perfectly smooth, then flavoured with orange powder and orange essential oil.

In the jars and toppings the fats are sunflower oil, cocoa butter and extra virgin olive oil, never palm oil. Every batch is checked before jarring, in facilities certified BRCGS Food Safety and IFS Food.

Sunshine in a jar.

FAQ

Everything about orange cream

Ingredients, uses, palm oil, allergens and storage: answers to the most frequent questions.

What is your orange cream made of?

Sugar, sunflower oil, cocoa butter and extra virgin olive oil, skimmed milk powder and whey, orange powder (1%) and orange essential oil (1%), sunflower lecithin and beta-carotene for the colour. The full list is on the product page.

Is it the same as orange curd or orange pastry cream?

No. Orange curd is cooked with juice, eggs and butter; orange pastry cream with milk, egg yolks, starch and zest, and must be kept in the fridge. Our Orange Cream is a ready-to-use spread that keeps in the cupboard.

Can I use it to fill panettone and cakes?

Yes: it is soft and spreadable, ideal for filling panettone, pandoro, tarts, crêpes and biscuits. Our orange panettone already comes with a 200 g jar of orange cream in the box.

What does it go with?

With dark chocolate above all, but also with vanilla, ricotta, almonds and pistachios. Try it on toast with a pinch of grated dark chocolate.

Does it contain palm oil?

The jars and the 250 g topping do not: they are made with sunflower oil, cocoa butter and extra virgin olive oil, or sunflower oil only. The professional 3 kg orange cream contains palm oil, as stated on its page. Read why we chose not to use palm oil.

How sweet is it?

It is a sweet cream, with 43 g of sugars per 100 g, but the orange essential oil gives it a fresh, slightly bitter note that balances the sweetness.

Is it vegan?

No: it contains milk.

Does it contain allergens?

It contains milk. It may contain traces of gluten, peanuts, soy and tree nuts: full information is on the label and on each product page.

How should I store it?

In a cool, dry place with the lid closed, away from heat. No need for the fridge, which would make it hard to spread. It keeps for 18 months from production. Shake the topping before use.

Do you have professional formats?

Yes: the orange cream in a 3 kg bucket and the orange topping in an 800 g bottle, in the Professional Collection; for larger volumes see our B2B Services.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is free for orders from €69 in Italy and from €99 in the rest of the European Union. All products are in the shop.
