Peanut cream

Peanut cream or peanut butter?

Peanut butter is made only of ground roasted peanuts; a peanut cream adds a little sugar and milk for a softer, sweeter taste. We make both: the 100% Peanut Butter (only peanuts, 27 g of protein per 100 g) and the Peanut Cream, which is still 90% peanuts, with 26 g of protein and only 7.9 g of sugars per 100 g. It also comes in the big Spoom 300 g jar.

For training there is the Protein Salty Peanuts Cream with no added sugar, for a sweeter breakfast the Pistachio Peanut Cream (45% peanuts and 5% pistachios), and for gelato and pancakes the peanut topping with 60% peanuts. Everything is roasted and refined in our facilities in Ribera, Sicily, certified BRCGS and IFS, and the jars are palm oil free. See also our guides to no added sugar spreads and topping sauces.

How to choose

45%, 90% or 100%: what changes

The peanut percentage must appear on the label (EU Regulation 1169/2011). The higher it is, the more protein and the less sugar: compare these three jars, per 100 g.

45%

Peanut and pistachio

The Pistachio Peanut Cream combines 45% peanuts and 5% pistachios: sweet and toasty, with 16 g of protein and 24 g of sugars per 100 g.

90%

Peanut cream

The Peanut Cream is 90% peanuts, softened with a little sugar and milk: 26 g of protein, 7.4 g of fibre and only 7.9 g of sugars per 100 g. Also in the Spoom 300 g.

100%

Peanut butter

The 100% Peanut Butter is only roasted peanuts: 27 g of protein, 8 g of fibre and 3.9 g of naturally present sugars per 100 g. Find it in the 100% Collection.

The peanut

Five things to know about peanuts

We call it a nut, but it grows underground and is a cousin of beans: meet the peanut.

Peanut plant pulled from the soil with pods on the roots
  1. 1

It is not a nut, it is a legume

The peanut (Arachis hypogaea) belongs to the Fabaceae, the same family as beans, peas and lentils. Botanically it is a legume: the shell is a pod that usually holds two seeds, the peanuts we eat.

  2. 2

It flowers above ground and fruits below

After pollination, the stalk under the flower lengthens and bends towards the ground, pushing the young pod into the soil, where it ripens: it is called geocarpy. The name hypogaea means "under the earth".

  3. 3

A plant that feeds the soil

Like other legumes, the peanut hosts bacteria in its root nodules that capture nitrogen from the air and make it available to the plant. That is why it is often grown in rotation with cereals: it leaves the soil richer than it found it.

  4. 4

The aroma is born in the roaster

Raw peanuts taste green and beany. Roasting triggers the Maillard reaction and creates pyrazines, the molecules behind that unmistakable toasty aroma: the darker the roast, the more intense the flavour.

  5. 5

    Why athletes love it

Among common nuts, peanuts are the richest in protein: about 26 g per 100 g, plus arginine (an amino acid involved in producing nitric oxide), niacin (vitamin B3), magnesium and fibre. Our 100% Peanut Butter reaches 27 g of protein and 8 g of fibre, the 90% Peanut Cream 26 g with only 7.9 g of sugars: on toast or in porridge they are a classic of pre- and post-workout meals. With no added sugar there is the Protein Salty Peanuts Cream (22 g).

Scyavuru quality

Pistachio and almond trees in Sicily

A great peanut cream starts with the roast.

Since 1950 we have been working nuts in Ribera, in the agricultural heart of Sicily. We select peanuts from approved suppliers, roast them in our own facilities and grind them slowly until smooth: the roast is what makes the difference.

In the jars the fats are sunflower oil, cocoa butter and extra virgin olive oil, never palm oil, and the 100% Peanut Butter contains only peanuts. Every batch is checked before jarring, in facilities certified BRCGS Food Safety and IFS Food.

Peanuts first. No shortcuts.

FAQ

Everything about peanut cream

Peanut butter or peanut cream, protein, sugars, palm oil and storage: answers to the most frequent questions.

What is the difference between peanut cream and peanut butter?

Peanut butter is made only of ground roasted peanuts, like our 100% Peanut Butter. A peanut cream adds a little sugar, milk and vegetable fats for a softer taste: our Peanut Cream is still 90% peanuts, with 26 g of protein and 7.9 g of sugars per 100 g.

How much protein is in your peanut creams?

27 g per 100 g in the 100% Peanut Butter, 26 g in the 90% Peanut Cream and the Spoom, 22 g in the Protein Salty Peanuts Cream, 18 g in the peanut topping and 16 g in the Pistachio Peanut Cream.

Do they contain added sugar or salt?

The 100% Peanut Butter contains neither. The 90% Peanut Cream contains a little sugar (7.9 g of sugars per 100 g in total); the Protein cream has no added sugar and is sweetened with maltitol; the toppings are sweet, and the peanut topping also contains a pinch of salt.

Do they contain palm oil?

The jars and toppings do not: they use sunflower oil, cocoa butter and extra virgin olive oil, or only peanuts. The professional 3 kg peanut cream contains palm oil, as stated on its page. Read why we chose not to use palm oil.

Are peanuts good for athletes?

They are the common nut richest in protein (about 26 g per 100 g), with arginine, niacin, magnesium and fibre. A 30 g portion of our 100% Peanut Butter provides about 8 g of protein. They are also energy-dense (about 600–650 kcal per 100 g), so mind your portions.

Which one should I choose?

For the most peanut and protein the 100% or the 90%; after training with no added sugar the Protein cream; for a sweeter snack the Pistachio Peanut Cream; for pancakes and gelato the topping. The quiz on this page helps you choose.

Are they vegan?

The 100% Peanut Butter is: it contains only peanuts. The other creams contain milk; for the toppings, check the ingredients on each product page.

Why is there oil on top of the 100%?

Because there is nothing else in the jar: with no emulsifiers or added fats, the natural oil of the peanuts slowly rises to the surface. Just stir it back in before use: it is the sign of a pure product.

How should I store them?

In a cool, dry place with the lid closed. No need for the fridge, which would make them hard to spread. They keep for 18 months from production (24 for the 100%).

Do they contain allergens?

All contain peanuts; the creams also contain milk, and the pistachio-peanut products tree nuts (pistachios). There may be traces of gluten, tree nuts and soy: full information, toppings included, is on the label and on each product page.

Do you have professional formats?

Yes: 90% peanut cream and 100% pure peanut paste in 3 kg buckets, peanut and pistachio-peanut toppings in 800 g bottles in the Professional Collection; for larger volumes see our B2B Services.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is free for orders from €69 in Italy and from €99 in the rest of the European Union. All products are in the shop.
