No added sugar

What does "no added sugar" mean?

A no added sugar spread is a cream to which no sugars (sucrose, glucose, honey, syrups) have been added: under EU Regulation 1924/2006 it may only contain the sugars naturally present in its ingredients, and the label must say so. In our range there are three ways to get there: creams sweetened with maltitol like the Pistachio Cream No Added Sugar and the Hazelnut Cream No Added Sugar, protein creams with 21–22 g of protein from the Performance Collection, and the 100% nut butters, made of nuts alone.

In the creams the little sugar left (about 8–16 g per 100 g) comes from the milk in the recipe; in the 100% Peanut Butter and the 100% Pistachio Butter it is the 4 g naturally found in the nuts. Every jar is made in our facilities in Ribera, Sicily, certified BRCGS and IFS, and is palm oil free. Looking for a specific flavour? How to choose

35 g, 16 g or 4 g of sugars: what changes

A classic sweet cream is about one third sugar. Here is what changes, per 100 g, when you take out the added sugar or keep only the nuts.

16 g

Sweetened with maltitol

Our no added sugar creams with pistachio and hazelnut keep the classic texture and swap sugar for maltitol: sugars drop from 33–36 g to 16 g per 100 g, all naturally present from milk. Same creaminess, lighter on sugar.

8–9 g

Protein creams

The four creams of the Performance Collection add milk proteins: 21–22 g of protein and only 8–9.5 g of sugars per 100 g. Pistachio, hazelnut and cocoa, salty peanut and salted caramel.

4 g

100% nut butters

Nothing but nuts: the 100% Peanut Butter has 3.9 g of sugars and 27 g of protein, the 100% Pistachio Butter 4.4 g and 21 g. No sweetener at all: the sugars are those of the nut.

Five things to know about no added sugar spreads

Sugar free, no added sugar, sweeteners, polyols: a quick guide to reading the label and choosing well.

Sports breakfast with yogurt, oats, banana and nut creams
  1. 1

"No added sugar" is not "sugar free"

Under EU Regulation 1924/2006, no added sugar means that no sugars or sweetening foods (honey, syrups) have been added. If sugars are naturally present, the label must add "contains naturally occurring sugars". Sugar free is a different claim: no more than 0.5 g per 100 g.

  2. 2

Maltitol, the sweetener that comes from starch

Maltitol is a polyol obtained from starch: it is about 90% as sweet as sugar but provides 2.4 kcal per gram instead of 4 (the EU energy value for polyols) and has a much lower glycaemic index, about 35 against 65 for table sugar. That is why it is used in creams that want to stay creamy without added sugar.

  3. 3

Recognised by the EU for teeth and blood sugar

For foods that contain polyols such as maltitol instead of sugar, the EU authorises two claims: they contribute to the maintenance of tooth mineralisation and lead to a lower rise in blood glucose after eating than sugar-containing foods.

  4. 4

Why the label mentions laxative effects

When a food contains more than 10% polyols, EU law requires the warning "excessive consumption may produce laxative effects". It is a matter of quantity: enjoy it in normal portions, like a spoonful on bread.

  5. 5

    Why athletes love them

Protein creams combine milk proteins (casein and whey), complete proteins rich in leucine, with nuts: 21–22 g of protein per 100 g and less than 10 g of sugars. A 30 g portion on toast provides about 6–7 g of protein, a useful boost after training together with carbohydrates. If you prefer 100%, the 100% Peanut Butter reaches 27 g of protein and 8 g of fibre per 100 g. Find them in the Performance Collection and the 100% Collection.

Scyavuru quality

Pistachio and almond trees in Sicily

Less sugar, same care.

Since 1950 we have been working nuts in Ribera, in the agricultural heart of Sicily. We roast the nuts in our own facilities and refine them slowly: with no added sugar, the taste of the nut has nowhere to hide.

Our no added sugar creams use sunflower oil and cocoa butter, never palm oil, and the 100% butters contain only nuts. Every batch is checked before jarring, in facilities certified BRCGS Food Safety and IFS Food.

No added sugar. No shortcuts.

FAQ

Everything about no added sugar spreads

Labels, sweeteners, sugars, protein and storage: answers to the most frequent questions.

What is a no added sugar spread?

A spread to which no sugars or sweetening foods have been added: it may contain only the sugars naturally present in its ingredients (EU Regulation 1924/2006). Ours are the pistachio and hazelnut creams sweetened with maltitol, the four protein creams and the 100% butters.

Is "no added sugar" the same as "sugar free"?

No. Sugar free means no more than 0.5 g of sugars per 100 g. No added sugar means none has been added: our creams contain 8–16 g of sugars per 100 g, naturally present from milk, and the 100% butters about 4 g from the nuts.

Where do the sugars on the label come from?

In the creams they come from skimmed milk powder (lactose) and, to a lesser extent, from the nuts; in the 100% Peanut Butter (3.9 g) and the 100% Pistachio Butter (4.4 g) only from the nuts.

Which sweetener do you use?

Maltitol, a polyol obtained from starch: about 90% of the sweetness of sugar, 2.4 kcal per gram and a glycaemic index of about 35. No aspartame, sucralose or acesulfame.

Are they suitable for people with diabetes?

They contain no added sugar and maltitol raises blood glucose less than sugar, but they still contain carbohydrates, fats and naturally present sugars. If you have diabetes, check the nutrition table with your doctor or dietitian.

Can maltitol upset the stomach?

In large amounts, yes: that is why the label says that excessive consumption may produce laxative effects, as EU law requires for foods with more than 10% polyols. In normal portions it is well tolerated by most people.

How much protein do they contain?

From 9.6–10 g per 100 g in the classic no added sugar creams to 21–22 g in the protein creams and 27 g in the 100% Peanut Butter. All the values are in the comparison table.

Which one should I choose?

For a lighter breakfast the Pistachio or Hazelnut No Added Sugar; after training the protein creams with pistachio, hazelnut and cocoa or salty peanuts; for cooking and nut purists the 100% Peanut Butter or the 100% Pistachio Butter. The quiz on this page helps you choose in twenty seconds.

Do they contain palm oil?

No. The creams use sunflower oil and cocoa butter, the 100% butters contain only nuts. Read why we chose not to use palm oil.

Are they vegan or gluten free?

The 100% butters are vegan: they contain only nuts. The other creams contain milk. None contains gluten ingredients, but they are made in a facility that also handles wheat, peanuts and soy, so they may contain traces.

How should I store them?

In a cool, dry place with the lid closed; no need for the fridge. A thin layer of oil on top of the 100% butters is natural: just stir. They keep for 18 months from production (24 for the 100% butters).

Do you have professional formats?

Yes: 100% pistachio, hazelnut, peanut, almond and cashew pastes in 3 kg buckets in the Professional Collection; for larger volumes and private label see our B2B Services.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is free for orders from €69 in Italy and from €99 in the rest of the European Union. All products are in the shop.
